Reed faces great difficulty containing the psychopathic tendencies that appeared after the birth of his daughter. He rents a hotel room and hires a call girl, whom he plans to murder to quench his homicidal thirst. His prey turns out to be even more messed up than he is ...

In the work of the Japanese novelist Ryu Murakami, Piercing quite naturally resembles Audition, the latter adapted with graphic bravery by Takashi Miike in 1999. The class and gender issues resonate perversely. The bloody claustrophobia is synonymous with a deeply disturbed society. Nicolas Pesce daringly transposes his dramaturgical material into a Palmesque mannerism influenced by giallo, and offers memorable roles to the two main actors.
