Inspired by a short story written in the 60s by (8 O'Clock in the Morning), They Live is, in the words of John Carpenter, « a Western about loyalty, morality, a political and highly moral film ». His intention unfortunately did not make any sense to american critics of the time who probably didn't feel concerned by the subversive message of an angry Carpenter.
