Inspired by Peter Ackroyd's novel, The Limehouse Golem could have been shot by Neil Jordan, whom the producers had approached before they considered entrusting Terry Gilliam with the project. After several attempts, it was finally the Spanish film maker Juan Carlos Medina (Painless) who was chosen for shooting this Gothic and flamboyant feature film. A film of which « golden age » director Mario Bava would have been proud!
