In the heart of mid-twentieth century Europe, Albert looks after Mia, a young girl with buck teeth. While Albert occasionally ventures to the local pub, Mia never leaves the house. A voice on the phone occasionally checks on her.

Lucile Hadzihalilovic's Innocence and Evolution already described inward-looking worlds where children undergo obscure rituals with an unspeakable purpose. This adaptation of Brian Catling's novel takes up many of their motifs, the disturbing repetitions, the strictly delimited settings, this impression of a formal device from which it seems impossible to escape. Earwig explores much more the dreamlike sensations, with hypnotic light effects and mind-bending editing hiccups. The filmmaker creates a nightmare of extraordinary beauty, which you have to surrender to completely.
