Since his memorable Versus, Ryûhei Kitamura has been a troubadour of gore, of barbarism scattered to the four winds in sprays of blood. The man hasn't even calmed down for his career in the United States: whether he surveys urban spaces for Midnight Meat Train or rural areas as in Downrange or this latest very dirty and even nastier opus, he never skimped on the physical torture of his protagonists. The anti-heroes of The Price We Pay, embodied with the right amount of malice and resilience by Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff, are undoubtedly his most degenerate offspring; the script reserves for them an ad hoc path of the cross.
