Since the 1980s, several generations of puppeteers from the Huang family have carried on the tradition of budaixi, the Chinese hand puppet opera, within the Pili International Multimedia studio. Their projects are more and more ambitious. After a TV series, Chris Huang took the plunge in 2000 with Legend of the Sacred Stone, a real wu xia pian entirely conceived with these famous figures with frozen faces but with masterfully reconstituted movements. It is an understatement to say that this second feature film transcends the first. On the big screen, Demigod: The Legend Begins is an astonishment of all moments, a bloody, fantastic, dishevelled, sumptuous wuxia.
