With Shinji Higuchi directing, Hideaki Anno, fresh from the cinematic reworking of Evangelion, writing the script, the winning team of Shin Godzilla takes on another classic figure of Japanese culture. If the criticism of the technocratic management of disasters is as acerbic as in their reappropriation of the radioactive lizard, the form here is less linear, more leafy. There is this impression of seeing an entire season of a teeming series unfold at full speed, changing gears, moving from one genre to another, from a crazy image to a deep reflection. All this to offer us a blockbuster like we have never seen before.
