A shady individual, his face half hidden by a mask, hands out invitations to a special screening. The onlookers go to the Metropol cinema without batting an eyelid. The film starts, the hungry demons wake up and emulate the film being shown.

"The cemeteries will be their cathedrals and the cities will be your tombs" proclaims the film in all seriousness. In all honesty, this pinnacle of Lamberto Bava's filmography doesn't quite live up to the Lovecraftian promise of that line. Instead, Demons stands as a superbly entertaining, pissy monstrosity with a cult French version. The actors, who are as ham-fisted as they can be, vomit slimy green slime, and almost mess up their gorilla make-up while attacking their little friends. The script makes no sense, but in the end, so much the better: only the perverse pleasure of exploitation cinema counts. As a bonus, a young Michele Soavi plays the ghosts of the opera.
